Sivananda Yoga Bahamas

My last visit: 20 Apr, 2025
Between the turquoise of the ocean and spiritual discipline
I just spent two busy weeks at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in the Bahamas.
The yoga holiday program is my favorite. It’s more flexible and therefore allows me to always have a great sense of freedom.
A busy Journey
The schedule is strict, but you can easily adapt it to your own rhythm. As soon as the bell rings at 5:30 a.m., at dawn, it’s time to get up and quickly prepare for the 6 a.m. meditation, which takes place in the garden’s covered pavilion. After that, you’ll enjoy 30 minutes of silent meditation, followed by morning chants, and then take part in the inspiring talks that mark the start of the day.
Now fully awake, you’ll have just enough time to slip into your yoga clothes for the 8 a.m. class. However, this is not the place to show off your new sexy yoga top or tight mini shorts—here, modest attire is preferred. An old t-shirt and some light pants will do just fine. Think comfort first, and cover your knees and shoulders out of respect for others. You’re in for two hours of gentle yoga. You can choose between the beginner or advanced class, but keep in mind that in Sivananda yoga, it’s always the same sequence of asanas. The first hour is dedicated to breathwork (pranayama). For yoga, you’ll need to bring your own mat—otherwise, they sell them in the boutique for $25 USD.
The food: a pure delight
If you’re a meat lover, you might feel that the meals at the Sivananda Yoga Ashram in the Bahamas are missing something—but otherwise, you’re in for a treat. Served buffet-style by the karma yogis, each meal is a true explosion of flavors and colors. And don’t be surprised if you’re served kale salad for breakfast—you’ll end up enjoying it!
Time for oneself
The afternoon is yours. You’re free to read a book in one of the hammocks, soak up the sun on the beach, or attend a talk on any number of fascinating topics. And here’s an open secret: it might just be the perfect time to sneak off to the Starbucks located in the Atlantis resort, just a five-minute walk away. A little guilty pleasure—an iced coffee with extra caramel and extra whipped cream—can really make a difference in this somewhat rigid adventure. I say ‘guilty’ because certain things are forbidden at the ashram, like coffee. But also because after indulging in a little luxury, you might just appreciate even more the calm cocoon that Sivananda Yoga Bahamas offers, far from the chaos.
Make the most of it!
As for me, I spent a few hours painting a mandala in the sun—honestly, it felt amazing to reconnect with that passion! Because what matters most at the ashram is taking the time to realign with yourself.
